Ave, Boston, MA 02215The Aquaculture Specialists play an integral
role in the innovative pediatric oncology research conducted at the
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through cultivating and providing high
quality daily care for zebra fish in within the Zebra Fish
Facility, in conjunction with research staff. Using their knowledge
of aquaculture husbandry, critical thinking skills and keen
attention to detail, Aquaculture Specialists are responsible for
applying their discretion and judgment to ensure optimal animal
health is sustained in accordance with federal and institutional
regulations and policies.Located in Boston and the surrounding

- Operates sophisticated re-circulating aquaculture systems, as
well as aquatics tank washers, feeding robots, and integrated
electronic water quality monitoring systems, all observing standard
operating procedures and safety guidelines. Resolves issues where
possible, escalates to the supervisor when necessary.
- Performs and records daily animal health and welfare
observations, communicating adverse findings to the appropriate
supervisor.
- Carries out necessary procedures to breed zebra fish,
maintaining necessary levels of wild type stock to support research
activities.
- Maintains live rotifer colonies needed to feed zebra fish.
Feeds populations of fish the proper type and amount of food,
depending on life stage and experimental application.
- Inspects fish for signs of illness and properly transfers sick
fish to the hospital tanks for observation; communicate with all
research staff associated with that fish.
- Performs water quality testing and maintains accurate records
of results. Resolves issues where possible, escalates to the
supervisor when necessary.
- Attends conferences and courses, consults with other
researchers, and participates in other professional activities to
maintain the level of continuing education that will provide
information to supplement existing procedures.
- Additional duties as required based on scientific or
operational needs as directed by the supervisor or Principal
Investigator ("PI").QualificationsRequires the knowledge of
theories, principles, and concepts customarily acquired through
completion of a Bachelor's degree in Biology or a closely related
field, including coursework in marine biology/marine sciences,
along with 1 - 3 years' professional experience in aquatic animal
husbandry.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Must have the ability to exercise discretion and judgement by
applying knowledge of aquaculture husbandry and marine science
toward the complex duties required of the positions.
- Analytical skills to identify highly complex problems requiring
the application of clinical, scientific or technical principles,
theories and concepts and in-depth, cross-functional
experienced-based knowledge.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with
people from a wide variety of social and educational backgrounds,
scientific staff, and service/equipment vendors.
- Meticulous attention to detail in record keeping and lab
organization is required to minimize errors that would impact the
